Fabulous 15 Minute Organizing Fixes: a blog series from simplify 101

One of the biggest questions we hear in our online classes is about how to get family members on board with getting and staying organized. In this Fabulous 15 Minute Organizing Fix, we’re going to be doing a bit of labeling. Labels serve a couple functions. They look great and add a finished look to your organizing projects. But more importantly, they help let everyone know what goes where. I know, I know… that doesn’t mean they are going to adhere to this! Trust me, though, that they are far more likely to go with your plan when you use labels. For this week’s organizing fix, we’re labeling laundry hampers. If you haven’t already done this, it’s a simple way to get all members of your family involved with the laundry process. I used these fun labels from Better Homes and Gardens that I printed on card stock and then laminated to protect them from moisture. I considered several ways of attaching them to my hampers, but I settled on this in the end.

Label your laundry bins so everyone to get the whole family involved with sorting.

I wanted something that I could easily remove. My laundry room is teeny tiny, so I use fold-up hampers. For day to day, I typically have “whites/light colors” and “dark colors” up. On laundry days, when everyone’s dirty duds converge in the laundry room, the other bins pop up to hold “bright colors” and “towels/jeans.” I store the extra labels on a jumbo clothes pin on a shelf in my laundry room.

Labels help keep things tidy, plus add a bit of fun and finish to organizing!

Using the removable labels and the fold-up laundry hampers has worked great for me. Not everyone always shares my views on what constitutes “light colors,” but now they put things in the laundry room and in a hamper, instead of on the floor. I call that a win! I mentioned my laundry room is super small, and I often feel like the majority of laundry room organizing ideas I find are for more spacious spaces. If you have a small laundry, I’d love to hear from you. What works? What doesn’t? What do you love? What frustrates you most? Happy Organizing!
