Home Storage Solution: The Canvas Bucket

posted by Aby Garvey on October 11, 2012 14 Comments

It’s been a while since I’ve blogged about a bucket. (It’s been a while since I’ve come across a blog-worthy bucket.)

But all that changed last Saturday, when I found this little bucket.

Canvas Bucket Target

She was sitting all alone in the makeup aisle at Target.

(Not my Target, mind you. My Target sells far fewer storage solutions of any kind ever since the introduction of “banana madness”. What’s banana madness? That’s my term for Target’s decision to turn every store into a grocery store. This seemed fine on paper. In fact, when they were making the transition I would excitedly exclaim “the bananas are coming!” to my family members. I was giddy about the change. I thought it would mean fewer trips to the store, because I could pick up bananas and other grocery items while out doing my Target run. But when the bananas arrived I realized the introduction of bananas (and all of the other grocery items) meant essential-to-me-items like favorite storage solutions had moved out of my Target! So now, instead of fewer trips to the store, I have to make trips to much farther away Targets when I need essential storage solutions like ITSO bins. This is exactly what I was doing when I came across the cute little canvas bucket.)

You can imagine, these days when I find storage solutions that I love at Target…I get very excited! Which is exactly what happened when I saw the canvas bucket. Since I’m not one to buy something unless I know what I’m going to use it for, I racked my brain for an excuse…I mean legitimate reason…to purchase this bucket. And then it hit me: I could use the little bucket to store my knitting stuff!

Threshold Canvas Bucket Target

I typically knit in the family room on “the big chair,” but recently I have been knitting before bed…to help me relax and fall asleep more easily. My cute little canvas bucket will make it simple to transport my knitting projects between rooms. And so the bucket hopped into my cart and we lived happily ever after. (Or at least we plan to.)

Organizing Takeaways:

1) Canvas buckets are a fun home storage solution that can be used for a variety of storage needs. Consider using them to store and corral knitting items and other craft supplies, stuffed animals, toys, laundry or dry cleaning.

2) When you’re out shopping for storage solutions, think about how you will use an item and what problem it will solve for you, before putting the item in your cart. Containers without a purpose can become a source of clutter just like any other unneeded or unused item in our homes.

3) Canvas buckets can be used for a bunch of home storage needs. They’re light weight and portable, and can be found in a variety of styles and sizes. Here are a few that are catching my eye right now:

Cuffed Fabric Bin from The Container Store

I love the colors of these but really, they had me at Reisenthel. (I love their products.) These would be fun in a kid’s room corralling small items like hair accessories, small stuffed friends, nail polish, or lotions.

Raccoon Bucket from The Container Store

Wouldn’t this be super cute in a young child’s room storing toys or laundry, or in the nursery storing baby care items? I think yes.

Crunch Can from The Container Store

These could be used throughout the house from the laundry room, to the bedroom. My daughter has a couple of these in her bedroom storing stuffed animals and we use another one as her laundry hamper.

Threshold Basket from Target

Target calls my beloved canvas bucket a basket. While I found mine in the makeup aisle, it didn’t belong there. I found others in the bath towel section of Target, but I couldn’t find this item online. So if you’re interested in this bucket, head to Target and then head to the bath towels department.

4) Target is still a great place to buy storage solutions, especially at the bigger stores.

What do you think of canvas buckets? Are you using any in your home? And how about banana madness? Do you love having the grocery items at Target or are you missing favorite items that they no longer have space for? Thanks for sharing!

Great solution! I have the same complaint about my local Target. It’s nice to be able to pick up a few food staples, but I miss the other stuff. I’ve tried doing all my grocery shopping there, but I couldn’t get everything I wanted, plus layering a regular grocery run onto a typical Target run was just too exhausting! My local store doesn’t carry the Itso bins (which you introduced me to) either, & last I checked I couldn’t order them online. Oh well. Still, I don’t think I’ll ever stop loving Target.

Oh wow, Nancy, you’re right. They don’t sell them online! And what’s worse is when I see how many of the other local stores do have them when mine doesn’t. :(
      Anyway…thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Love the bins. I don’t have any, but I could see using them to manage the messes my two boys create.

No Target in Austria – and considering your raving comments, I should be very sad about that fact… But honestly: reading Aby’s getting excited over bucket just cracks me up every time, that’s a good way to come over the Target-lack on this side of the Atlantic… ;->
PS: Have you considered writing to your Target and asking to carry a certain item? Maybe there’s other people who miss the itso-bins and they will sell like crazy – and if not, Target will just take them out of the store again after some time. Maybe that’s an option? I hate it too when a store stops selling something I truly love… Or maybe they can at least offer the itso-bins online, that would probably be easier for them…

Thanks, Nita and Karen for your comments! I agree about the circulars, Karen.
Evi, that is a great idea to contact Target and ask them to carry the itso bins or sell them online. I’m pretty sure they used to sell them online, so now it’s a double whammy. The second closest store to me also doesn’t carry them. But you’re right…how can they fix a problem they don’t know they have. Thanks for the idea.

UPDATE: I went to my Target last night and saw that they had some of these canvas buckets (different colors) and they are now on clearance. So, if you want one, act fast my friends. :)

I very much dislike having all the additional grocery items in my Target! I also thought I’d love it at first but it really made for a confusing layout in our store with less of the other stuff that made me love Target (and now all the organizing stuff is way in the back corner!). It also took my 7 year old son to notice that what I thought was a good price on bananas at 25cents a lb. was not so great as the bananas are actually priced at 25 cents each! I think I’ll still with my local grocer for groceries.

Very nice basket! I’m loving that teal colour :) . In Alberta, Canada we are finally going to get a Target next month!! I’m very excited to check them out.

Just listened to the Paperclipping Roundtable podcast you were in. Thanks for the great ideas – I’m excited to reorganize my own scrap area!

Thanks for stopping by and commenting Karla! So fun that Target is coming to Canada. Keep in mind, Target switches over their stock very frequently…so when you find something you love, you have to act fast. (For example, they don’t carry this basket anymore.)

Glad you enjoyed the PaperClipping Roundtable. :) Thanks for letting me know.

I LOVE buckets and baskets! My problem is often out of sight – out of mind. How do I get people to look back into the buckets?

I love your suggestion to only buy a container when you know what you will do with it. I love, love, love containers of just about any kind and when I volunteer at a local Thrift Shop (used items) I come home with all kinds of neat stuff thinking I will use it somehow, some way. (Often I do!) Problem with a store like that is I know I might not find that item ever again so I buy it and it truly does turn into clutter until I find that special use. Hmmmmm! Self control!!

Canvas bucket is convenient and gives an attractive storage for trinkets at home. My wife loves to use these as storage for her yarn and other DIY materials. I know some stores in Gold Coast that sell these by the bulk. These canvas buckets can also be good for gifts during the Christmas season.
